Selous Walking Safari

exploring wild Tanzania on foot

The Selous Game Reserve is located South West of Dar es Salaam, and is one of the largest areas set aside for preservation anywhere in the world, totaling 54,000 Sq. Kilometers! The photographic sector of the Reserve is on the mighty Rufiji River, and contains a wide variety of different ecosystems: the wide meandering river, with its lakes and swamplands interlaced with a myriad of channels, ‘terminalia’ woodland and open plains. This spectacular setting is the home of some of Africa’s largest populations of remaining wildlife. The Safari Company offers you the very best of the Selous with two types of exciting walking safaris.

Exclusive Walking Safaris
The Selous Walking Safari is a private affair which has flexible departure dates. One party of no more than 6 people can experience the exclusivity of having your own highly skilled professional guide in the remote, astoundingly beautiful northern parkland of the Selous Game Reserve. Each night is spent under the shaded canopy of a grove of ancient acacias in custom made “fly-tents”. Each tent is designed to give you an unbelievable view of the African starlit sky at night without any compromise in privacy. The Selous Walking Safari is fully inclusive (except champagne). The departures for these safaris are on any day with a minimum of 2 people.

Non-exclusive Walking Safaris
This Selous Walking Safari can consist of mixed parties made up with people who have similar desires to be at one with nature but limited to a maximum of 6 people. The low number of people lends to an extremely personalised feeling and a chance to forge a unique love affair with the African bush. Each night is spent under the shaded canopy of a grove of ancient acacias in custom made “fly-tents”. Each tent is designed to give you an unbelievable view of the African starlit sky at night without any compromise in privacy. This Selous WalkingSafari is fully inclusive (except champagne). Please contact us for departure dates of these safaris.

Beds are comfortable mattresses with crisp linen.
Outside each tent is a stand with basin, towels and soap dish, reminiscent of old safari days.
There is a bucket shower- with hot water available at all times of the day – located in such a way that it provides an enthralling view over the lake

Fly -camping is fully inclusive (excluding champagne)

Activities Morning and afternoon walks provide excellent opportunity to track animals.
Walks are accompanied by an armed professional guide and Askari (warrior).
Walks are approximately 4 hours in duration

Game The river & lake systems around the camp make it a honey pot for a huge diversity of animals including lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo and crocodile to name but a handful. The area is also home to one of the few remaining wild dog populations in the world.

Birds The Selous is birders’ paradise with more than 300 bird species.

Exclusivity Walking and Fly-camping may be booked on an exclusive or non-exclusive basis

The Season June to September: Dry and warm – animals are drawn to dwindling water supplies in the lakes around the river. With vegetation sparse, this is the perfect season for walking and for larger concentrations of game
October –March: Hotter and greener. This is the season for bird and plant lovers and is the main reproductive time of year so a good time for seeing young. There’s a chance of rain in November, December and January

Getting there 45 minute flight from Dar es Salaam, with airstrip just 10 minutes from camp
Transfers included from Siwandu airstrip to camp.
