The Shifting Sands are a couple of crescent shaped dunes which have been on the move across the savanna for approximately three million years. The dunes are made of highly magnetized volcanic ash giving it a dark color that is contrasted against other soil. The Shifting Sands are moved across the plains at an average 55 feet (17 meters) a year by strong winds.
The Shifting Sands are considered sacred by the Maasai people who believe that the sands originated from Ol Doinyo Lengai (The Mountain of God).
The sands have a magical quality to them. Due to their magnetic nature the particles tend to fall back on the dunes when blown away.
One could take a handful of sand, throw it into the air and watch as it falls back directly onto the dune. A truly magical sight. The dunes have been known to change shape and even direction at times.
The dunes are located in Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the way to the Serengeti. They are close to the famous Olduvai Gorge. This makes the shifting sands an ideal addition to any itinerary that includes the Ngorongoro or Serengeti.
