Quick Facts:

Capital –  Nairobi

Currency – Kenyan shilling

Official languages –  Swahili, English

Adventures in the wild:

Kenya is known for its wildlife and many who cross the Kenyan border do so to explore the Masai Mara and various other parks in search of the Big Five. Other areas such as Amboseli provide the perfect surrounding for elephant watching, while Samburu National Reserve offers a natural serenity. You can easily spend endless days exploring every inch of Kenya. If the Safari Jeep doesn’t entice you, why not try mountain biking over the red earth of Hells Gate National Park, or trekking the rugged terrain of Mount Kenya, or exploring horseback safari in your favorite park!

The Great Migration:

The migration is a popular draw for tourists as seemingly endless elephants, giraffes and of course wildebeest cross the border into the Masai Mara of Kenya, making for a spectacular sight! There is truly no shortage of drama as animals rush into crocodile-infested waters of the Mara River, closely followed by lions, cheetahs, and hyenas!

Mt. Kenya:

Mt. Kenya is Africa’s second highest peak (Kilimanjaro being the highest). It looms at 5199 metres and is considered to be a challenging climb. There is a lesser peak called Point Lenana which stands at 4985 metres which is more accessible and can be conquered by any fit trekker. Climbing this spectacular snow peaked mountain can take anywhere between three to five days. The climb will take you through lush forests, spectacular montane vegetation, and dazzling equatorial snow closer to the summit. A number of wildlife can be spotted on your journey making this an excellent all-round experience.

The Maasai Tribe:

During your journey through rural Kenya, you will undoubtedly meet members of the Maasai tribe. These beautiful people, in their traditional red ‘shukas’, command a strong presence in the vast wilderness. If you get the chance, take some time out of your day to get to know the local tribes’ people, they will surely make your experience more valuable.

City Living:

It may surprise many, but the Capital of Kenya – Nairobi, is a thriving metropolitan city that has a lot to offer for those who enjoy exploring big cities. There are many landmarks to visit including museums, cultural heritage sites, parks, plantations, zoos, and even a cheese factory!

Nairobi Nightlife:

The nightlife in Nairobi is also notable. Here you can experience great food, wine, and entertainment. Why not feast at ‘Carnivore’ – an all you can eat meat extravaganza that has become a landmark in its own right here in Nairobi. Or you can have a cocktail at one of the many upscale bars with a view! Just ask your local guide where the new hot spot is.

High Tea at the Giraffe Manor

Fancy eating breakfast while a giraffe pokes its head through the window? Well, that is high tea at the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi. You can visit the surrounding grounds and get up close and personal with these majestic animals.

David Sheldrick Orphanage

You will also find the David Sheldrick Orphanage in Nairobi where you can visit the rescued orphaned elephants and learn about the efforts of this incredible organisation in fighting poaching.

Karen Blixen Museum and Coffee Plantations

For those whose dreams of an Out of Africa experience lured them to Kenya, you can visit the Karen Blixen museum and coffee plantation here!

Beach Escape:

The coast of Kenya offers myriad luxurious beaches to spend a few days (or weeks) by. Many start in Mombasa, a coastal hub full of culture and western influence alike. You will also find paradise at Diani Beach (less touristy but still with its fair share of resorts) and Lamu, a perfect example of a historical Swahili city still living in a sleepy go-with-the-flow attitude.

No matter your tastes, the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya is absolutely exquisite. One of the best ways to experience these unique waters is by traditional Dhow boats. These have been used in this area for centuries and still cut an impressive silent on the horizon. From the deck of these boats, you can explore the reefs and islands of these captivating places.
